The Sade's Nocturna mockup

Nocturna is a gloomy record heavily influenced by the pandemic's impact, further increasing The Sade's already dark style. It collects eclectic tracks between 2019 and 2020, moving far away from the rock’n’roll vibes of the band's early days, embracing a new dark-wave and goth mood.

The album cover, depicting a black rooster, is emblematic and complex. It represents the triumph of the “beast” in a pessimistic and nihilistic portrayal of the human condition, which feels more fragile and guilty than ever. The imagery evokes the Middle Ages, a time marked by ignorance and uncertainty, mirroring our current experiences. The rooster symbolizes the transition between life and death, light and shadow, beginnings and endings, fall and rebirth, reflecting the instability of emotions during recent lockdowns. It guides listeners on a musical journey through the depths of alienation, where melancholic moments alternate with heavy doses of synthetic sounds, infused with 80s and Post-Punk overtones. Still, The Sade’s rock roots remain indelible.

The lyrics are gothic and wistful, exploring themes of nigredo, the alchemical great work, and the somber night of the soul. They touch upon the decay of spirit and ideas necessary to reach a new musical dimension. Out of an end comes the shift to a more mature time. The duality between dusk and dawn merges into a single luciferous divinity, suggesting that even evil can be a source of light in the constant quest for love that transcends darkness.

As we approach the end of the night, we hold onto the hope that the new day will bring an awakening of consciousness. After all, light always follows darkness.
