Tangerine Stoned
Biography
TANGERINE STONED formed on Italy's east coast in the summer of 2012. At first it was just two brothers—Christian J. and Danielle—their lifelong friend Francesco, a stack of blues records worn down to the grooves, the discovery of Beat literature, and a growing obsession with psychedelic rock. Like most bands, they didn’t start with a blueprint—only songs to write, gigs to play, and the feeling that somewhere out there was a road worth taking. Those early times gave birth to their self-titled debut album, released by Moonlight Records in 2013: a record steeped in classic psychedelia, Sixties counterculture, and the restless generational hunger for freedom—Tangerine Stoned’s own private Summer of Love.
In 2016, they released Delitti Scoperti, leaving English behind for Italian, their native language, and choosing the less predictable route. It was a hard-won album, written while everything seemed to be shifting. Not long after, the band went on hiatus. For a few years, everyone drifted into separate lives—until the story pulled them back. Christian J., Danielle, and Francesco started writing together again.
Still no master plan—just the need to find out what the band could become after time and distance. They drew inspiration from the new wave of international psychedelia, but also from home: the sea, small-town days, and films watched until dawn. The result was A Dog Day Afternoon, released in 2023 by We Were Never Being Boring and produced by Dumbo Gets Mad—the record that set everything in motion again.
In the years that followed, Tangerine Stoned returned to hit the road, performing at clubs and festivals across Italy and Switzerland. Psychedelia remained at the core of their live shows, but it gradually turned into something more personal: less a rock concert than a happening, where improvisation, raw energy, and a genuine connection with the audience matter as much as the songs.
It was in this period that the band embraced the definition they still use today: beach goth—a way to hold together the sunlight of the Italian Riviera and the melancholy of the off-season; empty beaches, cinemas shutting down, night roads, and the feeling of always setting off toward a place that might not even exist.
More than a decade after the band's formation, Tangerine Stoned are still chasing songs.
